In 2021, Google made an announcement that caused many web developers to pay close attention and most business owners to shrug because the announcement was made in technical language they had no reason to understand. The announcement: Google was adding website experience measurements to the factors it uses to rank websites in search results. Fast, smooth websites would rank better. Slow, frustrating websites would rank worse.
This is now fully in effect. If your website is slow or clunky, especially on mobile phones, where most of your potential customers are visiting from, it's ranking lower in Google search results than it would be with a faster, smoother site. Here's what those measurements actually mean for your business and what you can do about them.
The Three Things Google Measures
How quickly your main content appears on screen: When someone clicks your website link in a Google search result, how long does it take before they actually see your page's main content, your headline, your main image, or whatever is the most important visual element? Google's target is under 2.5 seconds. If your page takes longer than that to show its main content, Google considers it underperforming. Over 4 seconds is a failing grade.
From a visitor's perspective: if they click your result and stare at a blank or loading page for more than 2-3 seconds, a meaningful percentage of them will click the browser's back button and try a competitor. This is not hypothetical, Google has data showing that for every additional second of load time, approximately 7% more visitors leave without taking any action. A 5-second load time versus a 1-second load time can cut your conversion rate (the percentage of visitors who contact you) by more than 30%.
How quickly your page responds when someone taps or clicks something: When a visitor taps a navigation button, clicks a "Learn More" link, or interacts with anything on your page, how long before something visibly happens in response? Google's target is under 200 milliseconds, about a fifth of a second, fast enough to feel instantaneous. If there's a noticeable delay between a tap and a response, the page feels sluggish and unresponsive, particularly frustrating on mobile devices where users expect app-level responsiveness.
Whether your page layout jumps around while loading: Have you ever started reading a webpage and had the text suddenly jump down because an image or advertisement loaded above it? Or tried to click a button that moved just as you clicked it? That experience is exactly what Google measures. Pages where elements shift around as they load create a frustrating, unpredictable experience that Google penalizes. The target is minimal layout shifting, less than 10% of the visible content should move during the loading process.
How to Find Out Where Your Website Stands
Google provides a free tool that measures all three of these for your website. Go to pagespeed.web.dev, type in your website address, and click "Analyze." The tool will give you a score from 0-100 for both desktop and mobile.
Look at the mobile score first, Google primarily uses your site's mobile performance when deciding your search rankings, because the majority of searches happen on phones.
Score interpretation:
- 90-100: Excellent. Your site is fast and you're not losing rankings to performance issues.
- 70-89: Good. There are improvements available but you're in a competitive position.
- 50-69: Needs improvement. Your site's performance is likely costing you some search rankings and some conversions.
- Below 50: Poor. Your site is significantly underperforming and this is almost certainly costing you both rankings and customers.
The tool also provides a specific list of what's slowing your site down, ranked by how much impact fixing each issue would have. The list is written in technical language, but the most common issues translate to plain English fairly clearly.
The Most Common Causes of Slow Houston Business Websites
Images that haven't been resized for the web: Photos taken with a modern phone or camera are typically 3-8 megabytes, files large enough to store thousands of pixels of detail. A website only needs enough pixels to fill the screen it's displayed on, which is typically 100-500 kilobytes of image data, not 3-8 megabytes. Uploading photos straight from a camera without resizing them is like shipping a car to the next block, technically possible, but wildly inefficient. A free tool called Squoosh (squoosh.app) lets anyone compress website images in about 60 seconds each, with no technical knowledge required.
Too many tools and plugins adding code to your pages: Every tool you add to your website, a chat widget, a booking system, a social media feed, a popup creator, an analytics tracker, a review badge, loads code onto your pages. Each piece of code adds a small amount of time to your page load. Ten plugins add ten small amounts of time. Twenty plugins add twenty. Most business websites accumulate plugins over time without anyone removing the ones that are no longer needed. An audit of what's actually active and necessary on your site often reveals 5-10 things that can be removed, improving load times meaningfully.
Cheap or shared hosting: Your website lives on a server, a computer permanently connected to the internet that sends your pages to visitors when they request them. Cheap hosting plans (typically under $10/month) often put many websites on the same server, competing for the same computing resources. When other sites on the same server are busy, yours gets slower. Upgrading to a better hosting plan specifically designed for your type of website can improve your speed score by 15-30 points, sometimes more, for $50-100/month. For a business where even one additional client per month covers this cost, the upgrade pays for itself quickly.
Pages that aren't saved and ready to serve: Every time someone visits your website, the server assembles the page from scratch, pulling your content from a database, applying your design, adding your images, and then sends the assembled page to the visitor. "Caching" means saving a pre-assembled version of the page so that future visitors get the ready-made version immediately, without waiting for the assembly process. Most well-run websites use some form of caching. Many cheap or outdated websites don't, making every visitor wait for a process that could be eliminated entirely.
When Fixing Requires Starting Over
Some speed problems are fixable with optimization on the existing site. Others are architectural, the site was built on a foundation that's fundamentally slow, and there's no amount of optimization that fixes a structural problem.
WordPress sites built with heavy "page builder" tools (Divi, Elementor, Visual Composer) and many plugins often fall into this category. These builders add significant overhead to every page load. Optimizing them can improve a score from 32 to 52, but rarely to 85+. Getting to 85+ typically requires rebuilding on a leaner foundation.
The question to ask: "Is this site's performance fixable, or does it need to be rebuilt?" A competent developer can answer this after looking at your current PageSpeed report and your site's technical setup. If the answer is "needs a rebuild," the business case is the same one we outlined above, the monthly revenue impact of a 5-second load time versus a 1-second load time, multiplied by however many months the old site would have continued running, versus the one-time cost of a properly built replacement.
